Beached Boats

Edward Bouverie Hoyton was born in Lewisham, London in 1900. He studied etching under Stanley Anderson at Goldsmiths College, becoming one of a small group of highly capable interpreters of the pastoral landscape. He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1926 and spent three years travelling throughout southern Europe. After becoming Lecturer in Engraving at Leeds College of Art (1934) he was appointed Principal of Penzance School of Art (1941). He was a friend of Graham Sutherland, introducing him to Ben Nicholson during a stay with him in Cornwall. Retired from teaching (1965) to concentrate on etching and was a regular exhibitor at the St.Ives Society of Artists and the Royal Academy. His prints are held in major collections worldwide including the University of Aberystwyth and Penlee House Gallery in Penzance.
