Edward Ardizzone Artist and Illustrator (1900-1979)
Ardizzone was born in French Indo-Chinabut moved to England at 5 years of age. He studied at Westminster School of Artand became a professional artist by the age of 26.He was quickly successful, illustrating for a number of publications including the Radio Times. His best known work is probably in children’s books including the Little Tim series and many other classics. He was appointed as an official war artist in 1940, recording scenes of London during the Blitz. His distinctive style of illustration flourished post-war and became instantly recognisable. He was commissioned, alongside other leading artists, for the Guinness Lithographs series to celebrate the launch of The Guinness book of Records, creating a typically humorous print ‘The Fattest Woman in the World’.
